Lets begin the game.......
Moms win the toss and elect to receive the kick off. So they send their kick off return team, which is one of those special teams, onto the field. Dads will send their kick off team (yet another one of those special teams) to the field. Moms receive the kick off and run with it (called “returning” it) to the 25 yard line.
They now must move the ball an additional 75 yards to reach the opponent’s end zone and to score. The Moms send their offensive team to the field. The Dads send their defensive team to the field.
Moms are on offense.
The offensive team (the Moms) has 4 plays (called downs) to move the ball 10 yards. They can do this either by passing (the Quarterback throws the ball to a receiver, and it is caught), or by running (the Quarterback hands the ball to another player, and they run with it). If the Moms are able to move the ball 10 yards in this manner, over the course of 4 plays, they will earn another 1st down, which is a new set of 4 more downs. In this manner, they can keep possession of the ball until they score a touchdown, kick a field goal or have to punt. If they do not gain 10 yards after 4 downs the ball is turned over to the other team. Hence the strategy of either going for required distance on 4th down or punting the ball to the other team on 4th down.
Whenever the offensive team executes a play that gets more than 10 yards or past the first down marker (we will cover this later), they get a 1st down and begin a new set of downs. If the offensive team gets to the 4th down (the last chance to earn another set of downs), they can either punt (kick the ball to the opposing team), or go for the first down by running a play like those described above.
In general, the offensive team will punt on the 4th down, unless they are within 30 to 40 yards of the goal line. Moms run 3 plays and aren’t able to move 10 yards on the field. They decide on 4th down that they will punt the ball. They send out their punt team, which is another of the long list of special teams. Dads send out their punt return team, also another special team. Dads receive the punt and return the ball to the 25 yard line.
The Dads then send out their offensive team, while the moms send out their defensive team. Dads run their first down play - a running play. The quarterback hands the ball to a running back, and he runs in the direction of the end zone, to get yards. The Dads get 4 yards. Now, it is 2nd and 6: 2nd down, with 6 more yards to be earned for another 1st down. The next play is a pass play. The quarterback drops back from the line of scrimmage (the yard line that the offensive team is currently playing from), and throws the ball to another offensive player, usually called a wide receiver, tight end or running back. We will now take a commercial break, and explain each player’s position.
Let’s begin with the offensive team.
